About The Lothians

Within a few miles of central Edinburgh, the Lothian countryside is remarkable for the variety of its natural and built environments. Old harbour towns and castles punctuate rocky cliffs and great sweeps of empty beach. Hills and wild moorland rise up to the south. Former mining villages sit side by side with rich farmland. Rivers and the Union Canal entwine the old and newer towns to the west - now the heart of Silicon Glen. The Lothians are truly a microcosm of Scotland.

Tantallon Castle - Firth of Forth

Edinburgh's coast and countryside offer a beautiful backdrop to the towering grace of the capital. This is an historic setting, with castles, great houses and miles of glorious coastline. But trails and parkland open up the countryside for everyone - from picnickers on the fine golden beaches, to walkers high in the Pentland Hills.
